Match replacement line to the exact trimmer head
Record the head model, approved line and loading instructions before buying consumables.

Identify the head as well as the machine
Write down the trimmer model and the exact mowing head fitted to it. STIHL's mowing-line information says the diameter must suit the task and the head. That makes the head specification part of the purchase check, not an incidental detail to be inferred from a product photograph.
Use the current manual or official compatibility information for your own equipment. A machine may have more than one approved arrangement, and a replacement head may not use the same consumable as the previous one. Keep the identifiers together so that a shop enquiry can be answered for the actual combination.
Do not choose by colour or thickness alone
A line colour may belong to a manufacturer's own product system, but it is not a universal compatibility standard. Compare the stated diameter, profile and product reference with the exact head instructions. Do not assume that a thicker line is an upgrade or substitute a material that the manufacturer has not approved.
The historical brushcutter photograph shows a metal blade rather than a line spool. It is included specifically to distinguish those arrangements, not to recommend converting between them. Changing the cutting system can involve other requirements, so leave any proposed conversion to the manufacturer's approved information and appropriate supplier advice.
STIHL: mowing-line product information ?

Compare the amount you are buying
For a hypothetical price comparison, assume a 15-metre pack costs £6 and a 30-metre pack costs £10. The unit costs are 40 pence and about 33 pence per metre. That arithmetic is useful only after both packs have been confirmed suitable for the exact head; a lower unit price cannot resolve incompatibility.
These figures are invented examples rather than current offers. Check whether the product is loose line, a preloaded spool or another format, because those are different purchases. Record the included length and any reusable parts rather than comparing two packages solely by their front labels.
Keep loading and isolation instructions accessible
Read the manufacturer's procedure before opening or reloading the head. Follow its instructions for stopping and isolating the equipment and for the permitted line length. This guide does not provide a universal loading sequence, because the mechanism and requirements differ by product.
The RHS mowing guide highlights protective equipment and checking long grass for wildlife when strimming. Use that general context alongside the exact manual, rather than treating a consumable purchase as the whole operating decision. The garden photograph shows the wider work area that still needs assessment before a powered tool is used.

Make the next replacement easier
Save a photograph of the approved product reference and the head model with the manual. Keep remaining line in the conditions specified by its maker and separate it from unlabelled or incompatible material. If you change the head, update the record before buying another pack from memory.
Allow an illustrative 10 minutes to identify the head and 5 to check the replacement listing: 15 minutes of purchase preparation. Those timings are assumptions, not a loading duration or safety procedure. The useful result is a traceable match between machine, head and consumable, with no need to guess from a similar-looking spool.
